These new products in the ArtRage family contain all the tools found in the entry level ArtRage product, plus dozens of added innovations for advanced users. ArtRage Studio Pro was created for artists who require a professional toolset while ArtRage Studio was designed for artists who don’t need the high-end features. Both products include an intuitive, scalable and customizable interface, a "Canvas Puck", which allows for easy navigation on the canvas, customizable keyboard shortcuts, an auto-smoothing inking pen, watercolors, flood fill, selections, a text tool that for live text editing on layers and the bitmap "Sticker Spray" brush. Hobbyist and professional artists, animators, illustrators, scrapbookers and manga and comic creators will appreciate the software’s power and its ability to allow for seamless, artistic expression.

Customers can choose the software that best fits their needs. ArtRage Studio Pro's more advanced features include: Real color blending, sophisticated color adjustment options, PhotoShop® filter support, a customizable Sticker Spray brush and an inking pen with opacity, blending and anti-alias control. 3D programs can also make use of ArtRage Studio Pro's exported channel maps to recreate the color, volume, gloss and reflectivity of paintings in their native renderers. Matt Fox-Wilson, Ambient Design's creative director said, "As we were adding features, we realized that one product with a large set of features wouldn’t suit many of our users so we decided instead to create a second product aimed more at the mid-level artist. ArtRage Studio is perfect for that group of users. It's not a "lite" version, but a version tailored specifically to their needs."

Both products include the intuitive, realistic behavior of the ArtRage toolset, such as sophisticated brushes, numerous stencils, blending of artistic media on the canvas, and easy-to-use, customizable color pallets. Users have many choices of paper varieties and paper grains and paint and drawing mediums such as oils, pencils, crayons, airbrush, chalk and markers. ArtRage provides Photoshop compatible transparent layers that can be used for advanced compositions and allows photos and images to be easily recreated as paintings.

ArtRage Studio Pro beta tester, Hans Deconinck said, "Everyone will love this software. Watercolor painters, oil and acrylic painters and the comic book and manga artists too."

ArtRage Paint Software and NYC Subway Portrait Artist Featured in LA Times Front Page Story

Auckland, New Zealand, July 8, 2008. A recent front page article in the Los Angeles Times entitled "Subway Sketchers Create an Online Community" featured NYC artist, Ed Velandria and documented his use of the paint and drawing software, ArtRage.

In a graphic commentary on the intersection of technology and everyday life, Velandria uses the time he spends on his daily subway rides from Brooklyn to Manhattan to sketch portraits of other subway riders on his laptop computer with ArtRage and a digital drawing tablet.

ArtRage, by Ambient Design, allows anyone to easily paint and draw realistically. Users can use artistic tools such as oils, pencils, Crayons, airbrush, chalk and markers. There are also choices of canvas size, paper grains, stencils and layers. ArtRage is ideal for all artists including hobbyists and the education market.

Velandria loves the simplicity of ArtRage and how it allows him to capture the essence of his subjects quickly. "My ultimate goal is to really capture the soul of a person."

His subway sketching has caught the attention of other artists from around the world too. There is now an online community of "sketchers" that Velandria stays in touch with. He has about 500 subway sketches available online and his gallery has received more than 4,000 views.

November 21, 2007 - Three Million ArtRage Downloads!

In November 2007 the total number of downloads of ArtRage Starter Edition - Ambient Design’s free natural painting application - exceeded three million copies.

Since its first release in February 2004 more than three million copies of the Starter Edition of ArtRage have been downloaded from Ambient Design’s website. ArtRage Starter Edition is now at version 2.5 and has had many updates and improvements since its first release. Schools, hobbyists and people who just like getting messy with paint have been downloading and using the Starter Edition of ArtRage.

"It was just six months ago we passed the two million download milestone, and now we’re at three million downloads of ArtRage Starter Edition. It’s exhilarating to see the quality of artworks being produced. We’ve had great feedback from people who became disillusioned with the cost and hassle of using traditional art media but have started painting again in ArtRage." - Andy Bearsley, Technical Director of Ambient Design Ltd.

ArtRage Starter Edition is a fully-featured natural painting application. It has tools which look and feel like their real-world counterpart. For example, the oil paints mix and smear like real oil paints on real canvas. They even leave bristle marks from the virtual brush in the paint strokes. It is easy to use for new users while having features and technology powerful enough for advanced users. New features in the 2.5 release include rulers, DPI support, more image import/export formats, and many other new features and enhancements.

The Starter Edition of ArtRage is free to use with no time limits. It is also has *no* adware, spyware or other malware. It is available in English, French and German languages, for Windows and as a Universal Binary for MacOSX.

Recently Ambient Design also released ArtRage 2.5 Plus Edition on CD for purchase. This is the perfect way for people to share the unique painting experience of ArtRage with friends as a gift this holiday season.

ArtRage 2.5 Starter Edition can be downloaded from this web address: http://www.artrage.com/artragedemo.html

Ambient Design is proud to announce a major update to their natural painting application - ArtRage 2.5. This upgrade is a free update to existing purchasers of ArtRage 2. It is available for Windows, and as a Universal Binary for MacOSX.

ArtRage 2.5 is a significant upgrade to the product. It adds many important new features in a way that retains the unique look and feel of ArtRage. Among the new features in ArtRage 2.5 are the following:

  • Stencils and Rulers: Mask out areas of your canvas as you paint and constrain your tools to straight lines and curves. Stencils and rulers are easy to use real-world tools that look and work the way traditional-media artists expect.
  • Layer content transformations: Move, scale and rotate the content of your layers - in groups or individually.
  • Import images to layers, and copy/paste layers: You can now import an image as a separate layer, then precisely position using the transformation tools. Or paste directly from the clipboard into a new layer. This allows ArtRage to work more seamlessly with other graphics applications.
  • Printing resolution support (DPI): Painting files support creation and measurements in Inches, Centimetres and Millimetres, with control over printer Dots Per Inch settings. This is also retained in PSD import and export.
  • Smooth Blender and Precise Pencil: Two new tool modes have been added for users after a more precise look to their work. The Precise Pencil works more like a mechanical pencil for a precise clean line. The Smooth Blender gives soft-edge subtle blending.
  • Import and export more image formats: ArtRage 2.5 adds additional image formats for importing and exporting images. Support for Photoshop PSD layer groups and layer names has also been added.
  • Cleaner simpler UI: Even with the addition of many new features the User Interface has been made even easier-to-use and less intrusive than previous versions of ArtRage.
  • Many other features and enhancements! The complete list of new features and enhancements is available on the ArtRage.com website.

January 30, 2007 - ArtRage 2 for UltraMobile PCs (UMPC) Released!

ArtRage 2 is now available in a version specifically designed for UltraMobile PCs. This new version of Ambient Design’s stylish and natural painting application has been enhanced to make it easier to use with small form-factor portable PC devices. For the ultimate painting and sketching experience ‘on the go’ ArtRage 2 for UltraMobile PCs gives you style and ease of use.

UltraMobile PCs present two unique challenges to graphical software. Firstly the screen resolution is typically lower than a desktop or notebook computer. UMPC displays are typically around 800 x 480 pixels in size. This means there is less space to contain both the user interface as well as the working area of a project.

And secondly UltraMobile devices are commonly used with fingers as input devices meaning the user-interface elements have to be larger and easier to press. Typically UltraMobile devices are used while they’re carried in the hand rather than being placed on a level surface, so it can be more difficult to press user-interface elements even when using a stylus on the UMPC screen.

ArtRage 2 for UltraMobile PCs overcomes these challenges:

  • Increased the size of small UI elements: The smallest UI elements from ArtRage 2 have either been increased in size or made their ‘clickable area’ larger in the UMPC version. This makes them easier to press with fingers or a stylus.
  • Controls and panels get out of the way: Panels in ArtRage 2 get out of the way while painting. In the UMPC version they more actively minimize when not being used, and leave a more easily clicked control to bring them back.
  • Panels and controls hide when ‘Enter’ is pressed: UltraMobile PCs have an ‘Enter’ button mapped to a physical button on the front of the case. When this button is pressed while using ArtRage 2 all the User Interface controls and panels hide completely. So it’s very easy to work with all the panels and controls visible with one button press, but hidden completely while you’re working. This leaves the entire display surface available for painting and sketching.
  • All the features of ArtRage 2 Full version!: ArtRage 2 for UltraMobile PCs has all the tools, features and style of ArtRage 2. There has been no compromise on features!

ArtRage 2 for UltraMobile PCs is also still only US$19.95 to purchase! For more information about ArtRage 2 for UltraMobile PCs including full features, screen shots, and comparisons with other versions of ArtRage: http://www.artrage.com/artrageumpc.html.

ArtRage 2 for UltraMobile PCs is currently only available in the English language versions, for Windows XP operating systems. ArtRage 2 for UltraMobile PCs is recommended for use on small form-factor portable devices with a display resolution around 800 x 480 pixels.

  • Mac OS X Universal Binary: ArtRage 2.2 Free for OS X is now a Universal binary for PPC and Intel Macs. It will run on OS X version 10.3.9 or higher.
  • Felt Pen Options: All the settings for the pen tool have been made available. With control over pen softness and wetness, and the ability to use the Art Pen option for opaque lighter colors the pen tool becomes a powerful artistic tool.
  • Magnified Precise Cursor: The precise cursor has an option to be bigger and more visible.
  • Color Sampler options: The Color Sampler tool can sample paint with lighting applied or the pure colour of the paint.
  • TabletPC Numeric Entry: When entering handwritten numbers into text-entry boxes using the TabletPC input panel, the handwriting is more likely to be recognized as numerics, rather than alphabetic characters.
  • PTG File Thumbnails: Your painting files are now given thumbnails in your OS. On Windows, a Shell extension (downloadable separately) gives thumbnails of ArtRage paintings inside Windows Explorer when the view mode is ‘Thumbnails’. On MacOSX a custom icon displays the painting contents in the file browsers.
  • Many other features, updates and bug-fixes!

To download ArtRage 2.2 Free Edition: Go to the ArtRage Downloads Page. (http://www.ambientdesign.com/artragedemo.html). From there, you can download the Free Version directly.

ArtRage 2.2 Free version is still entirely free with no adware, no spyware, no malware of any sort. ArtRage 2.2 Free has no time limitations or any other limitations on works produced with it. ArtRage 2.2 Free version has a subset of the features of ArtRage 2.2 Full version with some features of the Full version disabled.

The following features are only available in the Full version of ArtRage 2.2:

  • Layers with Blend Modes: All 23 Photoshop CS2 layer blend modes are available in layered ArtRage paintings.
  • Layered PSD import/export: To help work seamlessly with other applications, ArtRage 2 Full version supports PSD import and export with layer blend modes intact. Layer transparency and visibility is supported as well as copying, moving, and merging layers.
  • Additional tools: A precision Airbrush tool with tilt support for graphics tablets, Paint roller tool for blocking in large areas, Paint tube tool which works well in conjunction with the palette knife. Glitter tool gives interesting textured areas to paintings. Additional tool settings: Some tool settings are only available in the Full version of ArtRage 2.
  • Metallic paints: All tools can use metallic colours for richer effects and sparkly bits in the glitter.
  • Custom Color pickers and color swatches: ArtRage 2 Full version allows artists to save sets of frequently used colours, and to define their own color pickers.
  • Reference Images: You can pin as many reference images to the canvas as you like to help get details right in your paintings. The contents of reference images can be scaled and panned around to focus on areas of detail in larger references.
  • More control over Canvas texture and color: With the ability to load custom canvas grains, change the roughness, add a metallic sheen to the surface, and affect the transparency of the canvas, there is much more room for artistic expression with the painting surface.
  • Painting resizing and rescaling: Paintings can be resized with a high-quality scale, or the canvas can be enlarged or shrunk around the painting.
  • More things than you can shake a stick at: I didn’t want to make the list too long - there are plenty of other features in the Full version to make it worth the price.

ArtRage 2.2 Full version is available to purchase for only US$19.95 from http://www.artrage.com/http://store.kagi.com/?6FGVH_LIVE&lang=en

October 12, 2006 - ArtRage 2.2 Released!

Ambient Design Ltd today announced the release of a new version of ArtRage, their award-winning natural painting software. ArtRage 2.2 is available for Windows XP/2K users, and a Universal Binary is available for Mac OSX users for both Intel and PowerPC. ArtRage 2.2 has been released in English, French, and German language versions.

ArtRage 2.2 adds significant new features which will appeal to high-end artists as well as hobbyist and inexperienced artists. Here are some of the most important changes:

  • Mac OS X Universal Binary: ArtRage 2.2 OS X is now a Universal binary for PPC and Intel Macs. It will run on OS X version 10.3.9 or higher.
  • Improved Memory Management: Memory use has been improved so that large documents with multiple layers use significantly less memory than in version 2.11.
  • Photoshop Layer Blend Modes: ArtRage 2.2 supports all of the blend modes in Photoshop CS2. You can access these from the Layer Blending menu in the Layers Panel. Blend modes are imported and exported with PSD format documents.
  • ArtRage Auto Updater: The ArtRage Auto Updater included in version 2.2 allows quick and easy updates when a new version is released.
  • Oil Thinners: The Oil tool now allows you to thin your oils significantly. Everything over 50% thinners starts to make the paint transparent to allow painting of oil glazes or gels.
  • Metallic Value Control: You can now adjust the level of metallic color applied to your paint to give partially reflective or pearlescent paints.
  • Glitter improvements: Glitter has other shapes available for different texturing effects. Also glitter now chooses color from tracing images for each glitter particle individually so detailed textured paintings can rapidly be created.
  • Reference Image Zoom: You can now zoom and pan the contents of reference images without changing the size of the reference pinned to the canvas to focus on detail on one particular are of the reference. With multiple reference images pinned to the canvas, you can mix detail with overviews.

August 9th, 2006 - New Zealand schools receive over 3000 copies of ArtRage for One Dollar.

Ambient Design Ltd has given over 3000 copies of ArtRage 2 Full version to New Zealand schools for one dollar per installed copy. ArtRage 2 Full version normally retails for around NZ$32.00, so this represents a saving of almost $100,000 to New Zealand schools.

In March 2006, Ambient Design announced the offer of their award-winning ArtRage 2 for New Zealand Schools for One Dollar in recognition of the difficulty many schools face funding the purchase of worthwhile software for students.

"We're committed to making powerful software easily accessible to New Zealand students. This will give them an introduction to the types of tools they'll be using in more expensive packages without the cost to the schools" - Andy Bearsley, Technical Director of Ambient Design Ltd.

ArtRage 2 Full version has many of the professional tools of digital artists, such as layers and Photoshop PSD support, with an easy-to-use and friendly environment for painting. It also offers tools such as glitter and thick smeary paints in addition to the more traditional painting media to make the learning and creative process more enjoyable. More information about ArtRage can be found on the web at www.artrage.com.

Teachers and software administrators for New Zealand schools should register their interest with Ambient Design by sending an Email to schools@artrage.com.
