FiberOptix does fur. More than that, it does string, fibers, whorls, flames, and a whole load of other things that fall in to the general category of 'fiber systems'. To do this, it 'grows' a mass of pseudo-3D fibers from the surface of the source image, colouring them based on a blend of the point at which they started, a blend colour, and a blend gradient.

The growth direction is defined by an underlying procedural noise map that guides the fibers as they spawn. This map can be adjusted and changed (even using loaded bitmaps if wanted) to alter the appearance of the resulting fur.

One of our favourite features is the ability to grow fur from a selection set. A bevel is generated automatically for the selection and used to define the direction of growth. In addition, you can add a 'wind' factor in that forces the fibers to tend in a certain direction, with varying degrees of strength.

  • Grow strands of hair, thick fur, and other fibres from your images.
  • Grow fibres from selection sets, creating 'furry objects'.
  • Colour the fibres from a gradient, flat colour, the background image, or a mix of all three.
  • Apply noise to change the direction of the fibres, creating clumping or flowing hair.
  • Apply 'wind' to blow the fibres in a specified direction.
  • Add as many lights as you like to create smooth or diffuse highlights.
  • Lights have colour, highlight, diffusion, and negative properties.
