While we were working on ShapeShifter, we wondered what it would be like to take the source image and 'explode' it in to thousands of spheres, all texture mapped with the source from beneath. Orb-It came from that.

Orb-It generates a mass of spheres, packed in to a selection set if you want, and texture maps them based on a range of parameters. The surface material works in the same way ShapeShifter did, providing plastics, metallics, and environment maps. In addition, by playing around with lighting and surface properties you can get some interesting effects such as pointillist and polystyrene surfaces.

  • Create thousands of spheres packed in to your image, sitting on top or recreating it with their colour.
  • Colour the spheres based on a fixed colour or the background colour.
  • Adjust the sphere surface properties to create metallic, plastic, reflective, refractive, and other sphere types.
  • Adjust packing controls to create tight packing, loose packing, or anything in between.
  • Adjust the Z ordering of the spheres, have them packed in a single solid layer, or spread far apart.
  • Add as many lights as you like to create smooth or diffuse highlights.
  • Lights have colour, highlight, diffusion, and negative properties.
