Smoothie started out as a tool for creating masks to use with ShapeShifter. When we were writing KPT5, it was a chore to get rounded rectangles and other smooth cornered shapes in Photoshop. Smoothie used a 'blur and clamp' trick to turn harsh edges in to nice, smooth edges.
This trick has been around for years, and I believe is one of Kai's Power Tips. It involves blurring the shape, and using a 'clamp' to convert the blur in to a sharp contoured edge. Smoothie does this using sliders, and also allows you to clamp the inside of the blur, giving you an inner edge, along with falloff values.
The eventual result was a plugin that, while simple, could make a range of interesting things from some very simple images. |
